Bromeliad Plant Care

Bromeliads can make great houseplants. You can purchase a nice bromeliad plant from your local Garden Center or Nursery. One of the most important things about caring of the bromeliads is finding the right space for it. Your new plant cannot be put in direct sunlight. Even placing the plant by a hot light bulb can cause your plant to burn. A very low light can be used.

You have to take very good care of your plant or it will not survive. Keep the watering to a minimum, do not over water the plants. Make sure your plant is in a container where the water can drain, by letting the water sit in the pot. The plant will rot if it is allowed to sit in a lot of water. Try using a half a cup of water in the middle of the plant and then water the plant with another half a cup. Then when it dries out then you can add another half a cup, but your plant should not need to be watered again until a week later. Try to plan out a schedule that will work for you so you can water your bromeliad like clockwork.

With all of the other plants out there, why choose a bromeliad? The reasons you should choose a bromeliad is because they are very pretty and plants are said to help relieve stress. Also bromeliads are said to help remove the toxins out of the air and then give back fresh oxygen. Plants are widely known for helping clean the air.

As strange as it sounds, when you have a bromeliad you are supposed to remove the flower. The plant has to finish growing and you cannot make the plant hang on so it will have to be removed. You can do this yourself by taking a sharp knife and a pair of pruning shears and then remove the bloom spike as far down as you can. Your plant will still grow but it may be lacking color. The plant will not die from cutting it. Keep on watering, as normal and it will be ok.

The bromeliad plant will not bloom once you remove the flower. The new pups as they are called will grow and they possibly can flower, provided that you maintain the care. Bromeliads in the wild can grow pretty tall but the plants from the nursery will not grow that tall. They are treated before they are shipped out. The chemical treatment will stunt the plants growth.

Bromeliads make great outdoor plants as well. You can plan them deep into the soil and then you have to maintain the care as you would if the plant was indoors.
