A Bromeliad Plant is a flowering plant which makes it’s home in very warm and tropical climate. Other family members include Spanish Moss and ground plants including pineapple. These plants are able to keep in water in a so-called tank via the overlapping leaves. The biggest bromeliad plant is called the Puya Raimondii, this plant can grow about 3 to 4 m. This plant will grow among vegetation and it has a flower spike of 9 to 10m and the smallest plant is going to be the Spanish Moss.
The bromeliads are found all across the Americas. They can grow from the depths of sea level to 4200 meters from rainforests and deserts. These plants are mainly found in Chile, Columbia, Peru and the tropical weather of Florida. When these plants are in full bloom they take many different shapes and sizes. Some plants are thin and some are flat and broad. Some feel sticky and some are soft. These leaves when in bloom can be different colors; maroon is the most common color. Other colors can be red, yellow, white and even cream colors.
These bromeliads can be identified by the fact that their flowers can reach new heights at 10 meters tall and then 2 to 3 mm width. They grow in upright stalks and they can keep their colors from as little as 2 weeks to 12 months. The height of the flowers and the colors will all depend of the species of the flowers. Speaking of different species of the bromeliads, in some species you won’t even see the flower part you may just see the leaves.
The way these plants take root will be different as well. The Terrestrial species of the bromeliad has very different and a more sophisticated root system that actually takes in water and minerals and nutrients. The Epiphytic species of bromeliad will only grow into a hard, wiry roots that adhere themselves to trees and rocks. The bromeliads flowers have a very faint smell and there are others that have a big scent. The blooms of the bromeliads called Tillandsia Cyanea have a smell that is similar to cloves.
These bromeliads have certain uses; we have been using a bromeliad plant since the days of the Inca, Mayan and Aztecs. They actually used for bromeliads for food, protection, fiber and they were also used in ceremony and they are still used that way today. The Spanish Warriors used these bromeliads such as pineapple. It came so popular that is was adapted into art and sculpture. Pineapple was given the approval as an exotic fruit. Bromeliads are actually very pretty and they bloom very nice.
